Path to PhD with MGA is a structured mentoring program designed to help Indonesian applicants prepare strategically for PhD studies in the United States and Canada.

Path to PhD with MGA: Empowering the Next Generation of Indonesian Scholars For many aspiring scholars, pursuing a PhD abroad—especially in the United States and Canada—can feel like navigating a complex and overwhelming journey. Recognizing this challenge, Mata Garuda Amerika (MGA) proudly launched “Path to PhD with MGA”, a structured bootcamp designed to guide Indonesian applicants step-by-step toward their doctoral dreams. What makes this program even more special is that it marks the first-ever initiative of its kind under MGA’s current leadership (2025/2026)—a milestone that reflects MGA’s growing commitment to supporting academic and professional development within its community. What is Path to PhD with MGA? Path to PhD with MGA is a comprehensive preparatory program aimed at equipping Indonesian prospective applicants with the knowledge and skills needed to successfully apply for PhD programs in the U.S. and Canada. The program combines conceptual understanding with practical guidance, helping participants navigate every stage of the application process. Through a structured series of sessions, participants were introduced to the PhD education system, application strategies, and the key documents required for graduate school applications. Program Objectives: From Confusion to Clarity At its core, the program was designed to transform uncertainty into confidence. The main objective is to equip participants with both conceptual understanding and practical skills to approach the PhD application process strategically. More specifically, the program helps participants: Understand the structure and expectations of PhD education Develop strong application materials, including CVs, Statements of Purpose, and Letters of Recommendation Align their research interests with suitable programs and potential advisors Build confidence and competitiveness for international doctoral admissions By the end of the bootcamp, participants are not just informed—they are better prepared, more focused, and strategically equipped for their PhD journey. How the Program Was Delivered The bootcamp was delivered through a series of four structured online sessions, each designed to guide participants step-by-step through the PhD application journey. 1. Session 1 (February 28, 2026 Eastern Time) PhD Education System, Application Process, and Funding Opportunities This session introduced participants to the structure of PhD programs in the U.S. and Canada, the application process, and available funding pathways. 2. Session 2 (March 7, 2026 Eastern Time) Preparation of Key Documents: CV/Resume, Letters of Recommendation, and DEI Statement Participants learned how to craft strong academic CVs, secure impactful recommendation letters, and develop compelling supporting documents. This session was also complemented by a breakout room discussion with specific mentors who shared similar background as the participants. 3. Session 3 (March 13, 2026 Eastern Time / March 14, 2026 Waktu Indonesia Barat) Preparation of Key Documents: Statement of Purpose vs. Personal Statement This session focused on helping participants understand and write two of the most critical essays required in PhD applications. This session was also complemented by a breakout room discussion with specific mentors who shared similar background as the participants. 4. Session 4 (March 17, 2026 Eastern Time / March 18, 2026 Waktu Indonesia Barat) LPDP Doctoral Scholarship Information Session Conducted in collaboration with the LPDP Scholarship Team, this session provided valuable insights into doctoral funding opportunities and application strategies. In addition, the program featured interactive Q&A sessions and breakout discussions with MGA Academic Development mentors, allowing participants to receive more personalized guidance based on their research interests. Strong and Enthusiastic Participant Response The response from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Based on post-session evaluations, the bootcamp consistently achieved high Likert-scale ratings, ranging from 4.65 to 4.83 out of 5 across all sessions, indicating a very high level of satisfaction and perceived usefulness. Participants particularly valued: - The practical, step-by-step guidance on writing key application documents - Insights into research alignment and proposal development - Clear explanations of the PhD application process and funding strategies Many participants also shared that the program helped them clarify their research direction, an area that is often challenging for early-stage applicants. While attendance gradually decreased across sessions due to time differences, those who remained until the later stages reported even higher satisfaction scores, suggesting that the program delivered deeper value as it progressed. A Voice from the Participants One participant shared their experience: “This program really helped me understand how to approach my PhD application step by step. The sessions on Statement of Purpose and research alignment were especially eye-opening. I feel much more confident now.” Looking Ahead As MGA’s first initiative of its kind under the current leadership, Path to PhD with MGA has set a strong foundation for future programs. It not only addresses a critical need among Indonesian aspiring scholars but also fosters a supportive academic community grounded in shared experience and mentorship. With its practical approach, strong mentorship, and enthusiastic reception, this bootcamp is more than just a program—it is a launchpad for the next generation of Indonesian PhD scholars.
